A portion of the Wa-Nadowli main road, which links Burkina Faso at Kaleo in the Nadowli-Kaleo district of the Upper West region, is on the verge of being cut off due to a heavy downpour on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. The Kaleo Dam overflowed its banks, washing away parts of the road. The main edges of the road have been severely eroded, making it hazardous for motorists and heavy vehicles.

In an interview with Home Radio Network at the scene, Mr. Albert Peehee, Assembly member for Kaleo West Electoral Area, warned that the road may break away with another heavy rainfall if immediate action is not taken. He expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to reconstruct the road last year when a similar incident occurred.

Mr. Peehee recalled that the then Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, visited the road in 2023 and promised to reconstruct it immediately. However, nothing has been done since then. The assembly member has made several follow-ups through the District Assembly, but the situation is beyond their capacity.

Mr. Peehee appealed to the authorities, particularly the Ghana Highway Authority, to urgently address the damage caused by the downpour to prevent a major disaster.

Mr. Yakubu Braimah, Presiding Member of the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly, also expressed concern about the road’s deplorable state, emphasizing that it is a major ECOWAS highway connecting Ghana to neighboring countries, especially Burkina Faso. He called on the Highway authorities to immediately address the situation to prevent any misfortune.
