In the war-torn streets of Juba, South Sudan, a group of young basketball enthusiasts gathered at the local court, their eyes fixed on a poster of the Paris 2024 Olympics. They had heard tales of the world’s greatest athletes converging on the City of Light and they dared to dream.

Led by their coach Royal Ivey, former NBA player. The New York native was appointed in 2021. Despite limited resources and political turmoil, they practiced tirelessly, fueled by determination and hope.

Fast-forward to 2024: against all odds, South Sudan’s national team qualified for the Paris Olympics, sending shockwaves through the basketball world. As they arrived in Paris, the team marveled at the grandeur of the city, their eyes wide with wonder.

Their journey was not without challenges. They faced powerhouse teams and injuries threatened to derail their campaign. Yet, they persevered, inspired by the resilience of their people back home.

The South Sudan Basketball team made history when they won their first ever olympic game during their debut on  Sunday, 28th August beating Puerto Rico to 90-79 and then lost to USA and Serbia 103 to 86, 95 to 85 respectively.

In the quarterfinals, South Sudan faced off against the favored Serbia team. The crowd was electric, but Wenyen Gabriel and his teammates drew strength from their underdog status. With each dunk, each three-pointer, they etched their names into history.

Though their Paris journey ended in the semifinals, the team returned home to a hero’s welcome. They had put South Sudan on the global basketball map and their courage ignited a nation’s pride.

As Luol Deng, their basketball federation president looked out at the sea of faces, he smiled, knowing their dream had sparked a thousand more. The unlikely journey may have ended, but the true victory lay in the hearts they had touched and the hope they had kindled.
