President Nana Akufo-Addo has freed 808 prisoners on the recommendation of the Prisons Service Council.
A statement from the Prisons Service Thursday said the President exercised his powers under Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.
The freed prisoners range from first time offenders who have served half of their sentence, seriously ill and old inmates among others.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Wa Central Prison, ASP Joseph Kpiriko, there are some beneficiaries of the presidential amnesty at the Prison facility.
ASP Kpiriko indicated that Presidential pardon is always granted to inmates of certain categories and there are inmates at the Wa Central prison who are part of that package .”
He said “The beneficiaries have not been released yet. Presidential amnesty is a process and once the President announces the amnesty, the internal amnesty board will take the beneficiaries through some procedures before they are released.”
“As soon as possible we will make sure the President’s directive is adhered to.”
The Wa Central Prison PRO revealed that as at Monday 30th March, 2020, the prison has 139 inmates in safe custody.
