The Upper West Regional Police Command has engaged the management and students of Wa Senior High Technical Institute (WASHTI) as part of efforts to promote discipline, lawful conduct, and peaceful coexistence within the school and the Wa Municipality.

The engagement took place on Tuesday, February 10, 2025, and was led by the Regional Commander, DCOP Mr. Francis Yiribaare. The engagement forms part of proactive policing initiatives aimed at crime prevention, youth mentorship, and strengthening cooperation between the Police and educational institutions.

The visit followed recent incidents of student misconduct involving violence and destruction of property. On November 20, 2025, some students attacked teachers and damaged school property. The Police swiftly responded, restored calm, and conducted investigations which led to the arrest of four students. The suspects were arraigned before court, remanded, and later granted bail.

In another incident on January 28, 2026, seventeen students of Wa Senior High Technical Institute were arrested for attacking students of Wa Senior High School who were lawfully undertaking school activities within the Wa Township. Police intervention prevented the situation from escalating and ensured the safety of all involved. The suspects were arraigned before court and granted bail to reappear on February 19, 2026. A total of 21 students of the school are currently facing the court in the space of two (2) months.

Addressing the students and school authorities, DCOP Francis Yiribaare cautioned against violence, vandalism, and all forms of unlawful behaviour, stressing that such actions carry serious legal consequences that could negatively affect students’ education and future prospects. He urged students to respect authority, avoid negative peer influence, resolve grievances through lawful means, and remain focused on their academic and personal development.

The Regional Commander assured the school community that the Police Service remains committed to guiding and protecting students but will not hesitate to enforce the law when individuals engage in criminal acts.

The Upper West Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment through the engagement to maintaining peace and security within educational institutions and called on parents, school authorities, and students to collaborate with the Police to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.
