On Thursday, April 10, 2025, the Upper West Regional Police Command apprehended seven individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Black Volta River at Chiantanga Community, near Dorimon in the Wa West District. The arrests mark a significant step in the region’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining, which poses environmental and social challenges.
The suspects, identified as Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu, were detained following a police operation targeting unauthorized mining activities. During the raid, authorities seized ten Changfang machines, two unregistered PNE and Apsonic tricycles, a motorbike with registration number M-24NR 6010, another motorbike registered as M-23-UW 4413, two unregistered Haojue and Apsonic motorbikes, and six student mattresses from the site.
According to a statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Wa, the suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations. They are expected to face charges and appear before a court soon.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Níi Darko Offei , the Regional Police Commander for the Upper West Region, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to cracking down on illegal mining activities. “The Regional Police Command remains steadfast in its efforts to protect our environment and communities from the harmful effects of illegal mining,” the statement read.
Illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey,” has been a persistent issue in Ghana, contributing to environmental degradation, water pollution, and loss of arable land. The Upper West Regional Police Command’s recent operation underscores ongoing efforts to enforce regulations and safeguard the region’s natural resources.
