Kennedy Agyapong-led Committee in Wa to probe military brutality.

Parliamentary select committee on Defense and Interior is in Wa to probe the military brutality meted out to residents of Wa on July 1, 2021.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defense and Interior has indicated that the Committee is in the region to find out the facts and report same to Parliament.

Speaking on behalf of the Committee during a courtesy call on the regional Minister, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central said the committee’s objective in Wa is not to accuse anybody but to find out the facts of the July 1 military molestation in Wa.

He said the Committee would have been in Wa last Monday but for the President’s visit to the region, they had to postpone it to Thursday, July 15, 2021.

The Assin Central lawmaker said the committee will not be addressing the Media on the matter because it will interfere the outcome of the investigation.

“With all due respect, we cannot be granting media interviews. If you do that you may destroy the facts. Some may misinterpret the facts reported speech. We plead with you, we are not disrespecting you but we want to get all the facts,” he added.

Welcoming the high powered committee to the region, Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih thanked them for the visit assuring them of the support of the regional coordinating council to ensure a successful mission.

“Be rest assured that whatever information that you need from us members from REGSEC. Why will really provide you with that information. The people of this region are anxious, they want to know exactly what happened.” The Regional Minister assured

“Preceding your coming the military high command had earlier on sent a 4 member committee to come and investigate the matter. They left yesterday and you are here today. The police are also doing their own investigation. I believe strongly that at the end of it all, the three reports will be put together and at least anybody who misconducted him/herself.. there is no way anybody can be covered.” Dr Hafiz Bin Salih indicated.

Some 86 young soldiers went on a rampage and allegedly brutalized some innocent residents of the township resulting in some of them developing a fracture on the right thigh bone.

The Members of the committee were; Hon. Kenndy Agyapong, Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Hon. James Agalga, a Ranking Member and also MP for Builsa North, Hon. Cletus Avoka, MP for Zebilla East, Hon. Christian Otuteye, MP for Sege, Hon. Peter Toobu, MP for Wa West, Hon. Kofi Adams, MP for Buem.

The rest include Hon. Mohammed Bawah Braimah, MP for Ejura Sekyeredumase, Hon. Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, MP for Klottey Korle, Hon. Ophelia Mensah, MP for Mfantseman, Hon. Benson Tongo Baba, MP for Talensi, and Hon. Kwadjo Asante, MP for Suhum.
