Upper West Journalists Trained on Conflict-Sensitive Reporting Ahead of 2024 Elections

Journalists in the Upper West Region have been trained on conflict-sensitive reporting to promote peacebuilding in the region and Ghana as a whole. The 2-day training workshop, held from September 6-7, 2024, at SEB-B Hotel in Wa Municipality, was organized by the Upper West Regional Peace Council in collaboration with NGOs like Catholic Relief Services and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Apostle George Apasera, representing the Upper West Regional Chairman for the Peace Council, welcomed participants and commended the media fraternity in the region for their work. He emphasized the importance of the training, especially with the 2024 general elections approaching. Apasera noted that journalists are sometimes influenced by politicians to report favorably, which can lead to conflicts. He highlighted the dangers of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, particularly during political seasons.

Apasera urged media houses and journalists to be mindful of their reporting and presentations, adhering to journalistic standards to prevent misfortune from political devices in the upcoming elections.

Mr. Mohammed Fawaz, Program Manager for Conflict Resolution and Management at the Office of the National Peace Council, stated that the training aims to bridge the gap between civilians, citizens, state actors, and security actors. He encouraged the media to work peacefully with society to safeguard the nation from conflicts before, during, and after the 2024 elections.
