Northern Star SHS grapples with limited infrastructure

By Albert Dapare

Northern Star Senior High School (SHS) in the Wa municipality is struggling with insufficient space to accommodate students on campus.

The situation has resulted in the reduction of the number of students admitted every year and it has affected teaching and learning.

Meanwhile, the school authorities is tight lipped on the issue for fear of victimization by the Ghana Education Service (GES) who they fear would crack the whip if they should speak to the media.

A visit by Home Radio news to the school campus revealed that the school has no sanitary facilities hence leaving students to their fate.

Speaking to a member of staff on the bases of anonymity, he stated that the school was denied an examination center by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) largely because of the absense of good sanitary facilities.

The school constructed makeshift structures with Zink for the students to safely use as urinary.

‘Despite the fact that we have few numbers, we could have sailed through the assessment of WAEC is we had the requisite sanitary facilities.”

According to him, WASSCE candidates of the school usually sit for their examinations with Wa Senior High Technical School due to the infrastructural deficit confronting the school.

A visit to the school lavatory shows it is in a very deplorable condition and they advised students from using it.

It is instructive to note that, the campus is engulfed with darkness in the night due to the non existence of street or security lights which is very crucial to the movement of students.

According to the member of staff, he was grateful that despite the lack of street lights, nothing untoward had happened in the school.

“Actually, we don’t have street lights at night and as you can see the campus is not wired. We had to extend electricity to the campus from a neighbor who is a herbalist. So the issue of street lights is a major concern.”

He stated that the challenges of the school are enormous while urging the government , individuals and Non Governmental Organisations to assist in ameliorating the challenges confronting the school.
