The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has commissioned the renovated Wa Sports Stadium as part of his effort to help develop sports in the Upper West Region.

The Wa Sports Stadium has received a significant facelift thanks to extensive rehabilitation work by Speaker of the House Alban Sumana Bagbin.

The VIP stand was torn off by a storm and the structure, which was constructed as part of the Ghana at 50 celebrations, has deteriorated as a result of the bad weather.

Mr. Bagbin has now renovated the roofs, repaired the seats, and painted the building to give it a fresh look.

In his remarks at a brief ceremony at the Wa Sports Stadium, the Speaker of Parliament noted that the restoration work will assure continuity and advancement in order to give the community a place to play and watch football.

“There are a lot of things football does in the communities that transcend in the football field. Imagine, then my dismay when officials Ghana Football Association and the National Sports Authority declared our stadium subpar and announced that matches cannot be played here in Wa. I couldn’t believe it that my teams here will have to travel all the way to Tamale to go and play your home matches. That definitely is unacceptable.” He stated.

‘The opportunity to ensure continuity and progress to provide an avenue to play and watch football served as the impetus for this undertaken. I was gladdened when a courageous young man, Awudu Ishak send those pictures. That was an invitation to treat, a call to serve and service I am elected to do.”

The Wa Sports Stadium is the only venue used for sporting activities in the region. It is serving as the home ground for the two division one clubs in the region and venue for division two league games.

According to the Speaker of Parliament, renovating the sports stadium will rekindle the enthusiasm and the unity that football continue to inspire in the people.

Mr. Alban Bagbin expressed his desire for the Wa Sports Stadium to be improved and insisted that the goal of the rehabilitation work is to get indigenes involved in situating the stadium in a way that will support the growth of sports in the nation.

“Bringing the Wa Sports Stadium to the standards we all wish for it as a vision is what have put our hands together and done. Todays commissioning is not to signify the conclusion of work to upgrade the stadium, rather it is to draw the attention of all indigenes of the Upper West Region to contribute to positioning the stadium in a way that will enable it to contribute to the development of sports in the region. This renovation will influence how others regard us.

The Rt Hon Speaker revealed that his determination to help unearth talents in the region has made him to adopt a female club which he renamed as Sung Shining Ladies.

He used the opportunity to admonish the people to take their security seriously and cooperate with the police while encouraging them to conduct background checks on strangers before allowing them into the community to end the serial killings in Wa Municipality.

“What saddens my heart is the recent killings in Wa. I want to plead with all of you, the security of you starts with you yourself. We have to be security conscious. We should stop walking alone now during dangerous hours. We must move in groups. Don’t get up alone and walk to any place. Always walk with people. The situation is not like before. I am making this comment because it saddens us. The security agencies are struggling to unearth the problem. You have the information.”

“I have met with the security agencies of how to protect ourselves. But you need to cooperate with us. We need all of you. Whatever information is at your disposal, give it to the security agencies, I am with them. Whoever is slapping us will regret ever to be born. We will fight back with our blood. The government has done very well and now there is visibility.”
