Upper West Regional Minister Takes Proactive Steps to Protect Government Lands

In a bold move to preserve government lands for future development projects, the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, has instructed the Lands Commission to halt allocations to private individuals. This decisive action was prompted by the overlord of the Waala Traditional Council, who raised concerns about the sale of government lands during President Akufo Addo’s recent visit to the palace.

The Regional Minister swiftly responded to the President’s directive to address the issue, engaging in discussions with the Lands Commission to implement an immediate cessation of government land allocations to private entities. Additionally, he pledged to conduct thorough investigations into existing allocations, potentially revoking them if deemed necessary.

During a courtesy visit to the Wa Naa Palace on May 7th, 2024, Hon. Stephen Yakubu introduced himself to the president of the Waala Traditional Council and solicited his support as he embarked on his tenure as the Upper West Regional Minister. He attributed the improper sale of government lands in prime areas to a lack of commitment by the Lands Commission to protect these lands.

Hon. Yakubu emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among traditional leaders and key stakeholders in the region to combat poverty. He committed to providing resources aimed at uplifting the populace from poverty’s grip, anchored in the values of education, resilience, and self-determination. He also called for a paradigm shift in political dynamics, urging stakeholders to transcend political affiliations and unite in leveraging political resources to elevate the region above poverty.

Naa Seidu Braimah, speaking on behalf of the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Council, pledged their unwavering support for Minister Yakubu’s efforts to alleviate poverty in the region. He commended the Minister for acknowledging the imperative of collective action in addressing the poverty challenge, considering it a significant step towards its resolution.

This bold action by the Upper West Regional Minister demonstrates a commitment to responsible governance and a determination to protect government lands for the benefit of future generations.
