UWR: Chiefs urges gov’t to work on critical roads

Eminent traditional rulers in the Upper West Region have appealed to President Akufo Addo to address the bad nature of roads in the Upper West Region to reduce cost of transportation.

In his welcome address, the president of the House of Chiefs in the Upper West Region, Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton VI who doubles as the Chief of Tumu reminded the president of the concerns that were tabled before him during their meeting with the president at the jubilee house.

According to him, they requested the president to tar Wa-Tumu-Charna road, Jirapa-Domwine-Nandom road, Wa Bulenga Yaala road, Hamile-Fielimuo-Tumu road and Dorimo-Wichau road.

“This year been the year of roads, we will be very grateful if these roads are included in the list of the critical roads to be constructed.” Kuoro Richard Babini states

He implored the government to assist in the construction of the Kangba irrigational project to increase agricultural production in Ghana and improve in food security in the country by extension.

According to him, the construction of the Kangba dam could be a major growth pole and game changer in the region because majority of settlers are peasant farmers and depended solely on seasonal rains.

He further urged the government to include chiefs in the decentralization process in the local assembly governance.

The council of state member advised actors in the political space especially presidential and parliamentary hopefuls to campaign devoid of insults, innuendos and incitements.

In his part, president Akufo Addo assured the chiefs of government’s determination to bring governance closer to the people and expand boundaries of democracy in the country.

The president urged the chiefs to speak out and join government’s fight against the ills in the society I.e corruption, social and economic injustice, crime and illegal mining menace.

The constitution forbids traditional rulers to engage in political activities but the president encouraged them to set the tone in the area  to help realize the vision for a prosperous and progressive Ghana.

I am counting on you to have a say and integrate yourselves into the developments to enhance the democratic framework of the people.” the president noted
