I don’t see SDD UBIDs and DHLTU as universities- Prof. Daniel Bagah

Professor Daniel A. Bagah, a former chairman of the governing council of the Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University (DHTLU) and a member of the Council of State, has stated that the two-degree-awarding institutions in the area lack the infrastructure of a university and that he does not view them as universities.

When the Upper West Regional executives and elders of the New Patriotic Party met with the British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson in Wa, Professor Daniel Bagah made the remark.

The eminent educationalist pleaded with the British High Commission to assist the two colleges that are short on the facilities required to house students.

The Council of State Member said “We have Dr Hillia Liman Technical University and the S.D Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies( UBIDs) If you visit them, you are from Britain and you know what University life is supposed to be. They are major secondary schools I should say, I don’t see them as universities. Why am I saying so, if you take Sd Dombo for instance there is not single staff that is staying on campus it is only students and majority of the students are even living in town.”

“And so, people graduate from those institutions without the real feel of University life because you would have been interacting among yourself as students, no interaction with staff. You go to Dr Hillia Liman Technical University, and the staff are there alright, academic and administrative but there is not a single student living on campus all the students are living in town. The reason is that we do not have facilities to accommodate them”

He sees it as a significant issue that needs to be resolved right away to enhance the institutions.

SDD UBIDS formerly UDS-Wa Campus has been saddled with infrastructure before its autonomy in 2019. Infrastructure is still a challenge for the University despite the institution being autonomous.
