MP for Wa East Inspects Disrupted Roads; Visits Voter Registration Center

In his commitment to enhancing Ghana’s road infrastructure, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, through the Ministry of Roads and Highways, declared 2020 as the “Year of Roads.”

This initiative aimed to rehabilitate deteriorated roads and construct new ones, thereby improving accessibility throughout the country.

However, the Member of Parliament for the Wa East constituency, Hon. Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, has voiced his concerns regarding the progress of the government’s “Year of Roads” agenda under the Nana Addo administration.

Dr. Jasaw expressed his frustration during an inspection of disrupted roads and the voter registration process on September 19, 2023, in Yan-yoyiri.

During the inspection, Dr. Jasaw highlighted the dire state of the roads in the Wa East Constituency, particularly during the rainy season.

He emphasized that this road condition not only hindered accessibility but also posed challenges for voter registration.

Dr. Jasaw explained, “The Wa East case is unique because our capital, Funsi, is located there. However, accessing Funsi is an arduous process. The road from Wa through Bulenga, through Yaala to Funsi is cut off by rivers. This has hindered our efforts to reach the voter registration center in Funsi, affecting the turnout for new registrants.”

The lawmaker stressed the significance of addressing this issue, calling on the government to support his constituents.

He stated, “There is not a single drivable road in Wa East district, despite it being a farming community with substantial potential. This lack of accessible roads affects farmers’ ability to transport their produce and obtain necessary inputs.”

The abandonment of infrastructure projects and the neglect of roads in the constituency have greatly impacted constituents’ ability to exercise their constitutional right to register for the ongoing limited voter registration process.

Dr. Jasaw urged the government and the Electoral Commission to consider establishing additional registration centers in the Wa East Constituency to ensure eligible voters can participate in the 2024 general election.

Residents struggling to cross rivers to reach the district capital, Funsi, for the voter registration center shared their disappointment with the NPP government’s perceived neglect of the people of Wa East Constituency.

Additionally, farmers and market women emphasized the urgent need for road construction to facilitate the transportation of their goods to market centers and support their children’s education expenses.
