Teachers should concentrate on performance of students and stop embarking on strike- Mustapha Ahmed

Mustapha Ahmed, the Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has urged teachers to concentrate on uplifting the falling standards of education rather than embarking on strike.

According to him, it is difficult for students to record grades below aggregate 20 in the Upper West Region which confirms the falling standards of education.

Speaking to Waris Annaakaa on Tegyaayela on Home radio, Mustapha Ahmed indicated that the performance of students is critical while insisting on teachers to be committed in helping the students to record better grades.

He described the performance of students as a collective responsibility and called on the teacher unions to reconsider their decision and call off the strike.

“In as much as the teachers are demanding what is due them, they should equally consider making the performance of students better.”

He wondered why the performance of students in the region is getting worse over the years stating that “to get a single number in Upper West is a like a curse.”

The Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Association of Graduate Teachers, Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union have effective today, Monday, June 4, 2021, commenced a nationwide strike action.

The strike according to the leadership of the Teacher Unions, is a result of the failure of government to meet their demand for a 20% Cost of Living Allowance.

As outlined in their release, the teacher unions say their demand for COLA has been influenced by high inflation leading to incessant increment in prices of fuel, goods and services.

The strike action by the teacher unions has been confirmed to GhanaWeb by the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Tanko Musah.

The strike comes as a pile-on to the pressure on the government of Ghana which has been battling with a worsening economic crisis.
