With just one week remaining until the New Patriotic Party (NPP) selects its presidential flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, a final poll by Global InfoAnalytics has projected a commanding victory for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to the survey released by the research firm, headed by Executive Director Mussa Dankwa, Dr. Bawumia is poised to secure 57% of the delegate votes in the January 31 primaries, potentially achieving a first-round “one-touch” win without the need for a runoff.
The poll, described as the outfit’s final pre-primary assessment, places Bawumia far ahead of his main challengers, including Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and other contenders. Earlier surveys by Global InfoAnalytics had shown Bawumia steadily widening his lead among delegates.
However, the data-driven projection stands in stark contrast to a persistent prophecy from Prophet Bernard ElBernard Nelson-Eshun, founder of Spiritlife Ministries, who has repeatedly declared that Kennedy Agyapong will emerge as the NPP’s flagbearer.
Prophet ElBernard has maintained his stance throughout the campaign, even reaffirming it publicly at events attended by Agyapong supporters. His prophecy has sparked intense debate, with some viewing it as divine intervention and others dismissing it amid competing predictions from various clergymen.
Political analyst Professor Ransford Gyampo has characterised the upcoming vote as “a battle between science and prophecy,” highlighting the unusual clash between empirical polling and spiritual declarations in Ghanaian politics.
The NPP primaries come at a critical juncture for the party, following its defeat in the 2024 general elections. Delegates will choose from a field that includes Bawumia, Agyapong, and several others, with the winner tasked with leading efforts to “break the eight” cycle and return the party to power in 2028.
As campaigning enters its final stretch, aspirants have intensified nationwide tours, while party elders call for unity regardless of the outcome.
Delegates head to the polls on January 31 in what promises to be one of the most closely watched internal elections in recent NPP history. Whether data or divine revelation prevails remains to be seen.
