The Wa Technical Institute in the Upper West Region has been temporarily closed for one week following a violent disturbance that left several school properties destroyed and created fear and panic among students and staff. The chaos began on the night of Thursday, November 20, when a group of unknown men from town, reportedly aided by some students, launched an unexpected attack on the school’s Cadet Corps.
The confrontation quickly escalated into widespread violence that rippled across the campus, with some students taking advantage of the situation to loot several school stores. Items worth thousands of Ghana cedis, including electronics, food supplies, and learning materials, were stolen or vandalized. Dormitories, classrooms, and administrative offices were also affected, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
The school management, in consultation with the Wa Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), ordered the immediate closure of the institution to prevent further escalation and to allow for calm and order to be restored. The safety of students is the top priority, and authorities are working closely with security agencies to investigate the matter.
The school will remain closed for a week while investigations continue, and a new resumption date will be communicated after the situation has been fully reviewed and necessary security measures have been put in place. Students and parents are urged to remain calm as the school works to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of all learners.
