UWR: Tricycle drivers endorse Dr Rashid Pelpuo

A Group of tricycle drivers in the Upper West Region have endorsed the candidature of John Mahama and Dr. Rashid Pelpuo in the Wa Central constituency ahead of the 2020 general elections.

The group on Saturday, November 28th, 2020 marched along the principal streets of Wa, with placards indicating their support to the policies of the National Democratic Congress(NDC).

Noticeable policy among the placards has to do with the legalization of “okada” or tricycle business which gained attention in the NDC’s manifesto.

According to the Chairman of the Tricycle Drivers Association, Mr. Salifu Sabogu, the purpose of the walk was to show appreciation to former President John Mahama and the NDC for their contributions in developing Ghana.

Tricycles also known as Mahama Camboo were introduced by the Mahama led administration in the Upper West Region to boost the transport sector and provide honest living for the youth.

The region had challenges with transportation hence the former president took the initiative to introduce tricycles in the area.

The initiative transformed lives and created jobs for people in the region and in appreciation they embarked on a sensitization walk to garner for more votes for the NDC flag bearer as well as Dr Rashid Pelpuo.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Salifu said “before the introduction of “camboo” in the upper west region, most of the youth were unemployed and they were compelled to engage in illegal activities for living”.

According to him, the introduction of the “Mahama Camboo” business has reduced social vices among the youth.

Mr Salifu therefore described the tricycle business as lucrative and one that has provided decent income for the youth to earn a good living.

The Chairman of the Association called on the leadership of the NDC to consider their views in setting up the regulatory framework for the operations of “okada” or tricycles should the NDC win the 2020 polls.

The NDC Parliamentary candidate for Wa Central, Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo said the NDC is committed to the legalization and regulation of “okada” and “camboo” business to offer decent and sustainable jobs along the transport sector.

Dr. Rashid Pelpuo revealed the NDC will establish a secretariat for camboo and okada operations to help in the regulation of the business.

He thanked the “Camboo” drivers for committing their support and therefore urged them to go out in their numbers and vote for him and John Mahama in the upcoming general elections.
