Experts are working towards the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines

President Nana Akufo Addo has revealed that some institutions in Ghana have been tasked to work assiduously towards the procurement and deployment of COVID-19 vaccines.

In his address to the nation on measures taken against COVID-19, he said “I have put together a team of experts from the relevant institutions and agencies, who are working assiduously towards the procurement and deployment of the vaccines in Ghana.”

The president was full of praise for United States of America and the United Kingdom for the urgent approval of COVID-19 vaccines in a battle to defeat the pandemic.

He allayed fears over the safety and efficacy of Newly-developed vaccines while indicating that the government of Ghana will ensure COVID-19 vaccines are effective and safe when deployed.

He revealed that there is marginal reduction of the total number of active cases from one thousand, one hundred and thirty-nine (1,149) to nine hundred and forty-six (946) as at Friday 18 December, 2020 with fifty-two thousand, six hundred and seventy-five (52,675) recoveries.

The president added that the hospitalization rates continue to be low thereby rendering the treatment centers virtually empty.

“As per data from Ghana Health Service, some regions have no recorded active cases.” he said

He furthered that out of a total of fifty-three thousand, nine hundred and fifty-four (53,954) confirmed cases, three hundred and thirty-three (333) died.

“It is important to stress that our boarders by land and sea will remain closed to human traffic until further notice. Beaches, pubs, cinemas and night clubs remain closed until further notice. All other institutions that have been cleared to function are to continue to do so in strict adherence to the COVID-19 protocols.”

He urged families to err on the side of caution and observe the COVID-19 protocols during the celebration of Christmas.

The update is the twentieth since the outbreak of the pandemic and the first since the 2020 general elections.
