Tema West MP, Snatches Ballot Papers meant for Speaker Election in Parliament

The Member of Parliament elect for Tema West Constituency, Carlos Ahenkorah went straight to snatched ballot papers on the floor of Ghana’s Parliament during voting to process to elect a Speaker for the house.

The 7th Parliament of Ghana was dissolved on 6th January 2021 to pave the way for the constitution of the 8th Parliament.

The work of the 8th Parliament would commence upon the election of a new speaker as provided by Article 95(3) of the 1992 Constitution.

The process to elect a new Speaker for Ghana’s 8th Parliament saw a series of drama unfolding on the floor of the house.

Iconic is the snatching of ballot papers meant for electing the speaker by the Tema West MP-elect Carlos Ahenkora.

The NPP proposed Prof.Aron Mike Oquaye to be the speaker while the NDC proposed Alban Bagbin to lead the 275 members legislative chamber.

Voting was staged to select the Speaker among the two, Prof. Mike Oquaye got 136 out of 275 votes.

There was one rejected ballot, however, the counting to obtain votes obtained by the NDC nominee was interrupted following the snatching of ballot papers by an MP-elect.

Some NDC MPs chased him down the house to retrieve the snatched ballot papers amid huge chaos.
