Assist the security agencies to bring fertilizer smuggling to an end- Akufo Addo to Chiefs
President Akufo-Addo has appealed to the chiefs and people of the Upper West Region to cooperate with security agencies in the region to cut down on the smuggling of fertiliser out of the country.
He said the fertilizer is subsidized with taxpayers money and described those who engaged in fertilizer smuggling as selfish and criminals.
He made this known in separate meetings with chiefs and traditional rulers in Wa Municipal, Sissala East Municipal, Nandom Municipal and Lambusie District.
The President was embarked on a two day tour of the region as part of his annual visit to see how government policies are impacting on the lives of the people and to also thank the people after winning the 2020 elections.
The President also used the opportunity the opportunity to apologize for the molestation of Wa residents by the military.
Addressing traditional rulers, President Nana Akufo Addo discouraged the people from involving themselves in the dastardly act saying it is not right because according to him, it leads to shortages in the country.
He said he will talk to the minister of agriculture to address the shortage of fertilizer in the area.
“On the issue of fertilizer I want to make an appeal to the elders and traditional rulers of the area to assist the police and security forces to cut down on the smuggling of fertilizers out of our country. It is not right that inputs for our agriculture which has been financed by the Ghanaian tax payer should find their way to other countries largely because of the greed and of the few criminal elements in our society. It is not right, it lead us to shortages here in our own country.”
“And that is why I am appealing to you wa Naa and your elected to assist the security agencies to bring the smuggling to an end.” the president indicated.
