Feminine Pride : St Francis Girls SHS Crowned Winners Of Upper West Regional Energy Commissions Renewable Energy Contest

Jirapa-based St Francis Girls Senior High School emerged winners of the upper west edition of the annual Energy Commission SHS Renewable Energy Challenged hosted at Wa Senior High Technical School.

The all girls school shook off threats from a pack of four mixed schools and one all boys school to lift the ultimate in the keenly contested programme organized by the Energy Commission of Ghana.

The one day program saw six selected schools from the upper west region housed at the Wa Senior High Technical School in a bid to promote application of scientific concepts.

From Micheal Faraday’s concept of Electromagnetism to Joseph Henry’s universal usages of coils and Electromagnets, the selected students and schools showed their worth in the technological world.

Wa Senior High School (WASEC) opened the contest with a unique on wind turbines and it’s application to the current energy crisis.

The presentation was followed by similar work from Lawra SHS, Nandom SHS, Queen Of Peace, St Francis Girls and host Wa Secondary Technical School.

From the stunning hydro electricity to the hybrid power plant from Nansecans, St Francis Girls SHS unleashed a programme winning alcohol based Stove.

The winning program, demonstrated in front of the watching crowd, saw alcohol being used as the source of fuel in a well crafted local stove.

The judges on the day filtered the schools based on the veracity, genuineness and uniqueness of the packages on parade.

Queen of Peace SHS finished sixth from the six schools with 63.5 marks for their efforts.

Host school, Wa SHTS cumulated 67.7 points to finish fifth from the six school contest.

The Great Wa SHS followed with 71 points for their stunning effort from the turbine concept.

Nandom Secondary finished third with a healthy 78 points and was followed by Lawra SHS (LAWSEC) with 79 points.

St Francis Girls Senior High School rose to the podium with 82.5 points from their alcohol based stove.

The single sex school were crowned winners and given the ticket to represent upper west region in the zonal edition slated for Tamale in the northern region.

Each student, lead teacher and contesting school were certified by the organizers alongside cash prizes.

This is the second edition of the Energy Commission Inter Schools Renewable Energy contest.
