Prices of Essentials are Rising Daily – Catholic Bishops Cry to President

The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has lamented to the President, HE Nana Akufo Addo over the increase in prices of essential goods and services in the country.

The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev. Philip Naameh who made the contention at the 2021 plenary assembly of the Bishops Conference in Wa, pointed out that, poverty stir us in the face as many people struggle to keep families and lives together.

“Poverty is grinding down millions of people all over the country. Prices of essentials are rising daily. People seem to struggle to keep families together”.

He further expressed the disappointment in the management of public resources and called on the President to clamp down on corruption in the country, intimating its practices to be taking a toll on the national economy leading to increasing economic hardships in the country.

“Though poverty stares us in the face, it appears lost to those with power. The expressed commitment of the president of the republic to protect the public purse, a promise that citizens welcomed, seems to be an illusion now. Are those managing the public purse not concerned about waste and misapplication of resources that belong to all Ghanaians? Can this be referred to as irresponsible use of power or the lack of empathy and compassion?”

The president of the Conference also called for an open and honest dialogue between the government and all stakeholders to address the difficulties that have arisen in the education and health sectors due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The theme for this year’s Catholic Bishops Conference is “fratellituti and Covid-19: pastoral challenges and opportunities in Ghana”.
