Dr Hafiz Bin Salih joins teachers and pupils of Wa Model Primary to mark Green Ghana day

Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minster joined teachers and pupils of Wa Model JHS block B to mark Green Ghana day which was observed across the country on Friday, 10th June, 2022.

Addressing the media after the activity, the Minister charged the School authorities to supervise the pupils to nurture the seedlings planted.

He underscored the need to inculcate the habit of planting trees in the young once to protect the country’s vegetative cover.

For his part, the Upper West Regional Director of Education, Abdul Razak Korah indicated that the seedlings planted will be taken care of to show their contribution towards making the country green.

“As and when the monitoring is ongoing and there are challenges, We will come knocking at your door to report on the status of the trees that we have planted.”

The head mistress of the school, Madam Regina Tierikuu, indicated the need to fence the seedlings for maximum protection.

The Upper West Region is expected to plant 600,000 seedlings in forest reserves, homes, streets and other places.

About 230,000 seedlings were planted in the region last year and their survival rate is 85%, that is according to the general manager of the Wa forestry division, Stephen Asamoah Dua.

The ceremonial planting was done at the Wa forest reserve as the Upper West Regional Minister was joined by Security Services, Heads of departments, staff of forestry division to mark the day.

The Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih expressed confidence in the success of the program saying “Last year in the upper west region, we planted over 150,000 trees. This year the target is 600,000. With the enthusiasm of the people, we will once again exceed the target. I am reliably informed that 85% of the seedlings we planted last year survived.”

He noted that the Region is committed to the success of the project as the exercise will protect the country’s vegetative cover which has been threatened over the years.

“If we are able to maintain the momentum, Ghana’s vegetative cover will increase. Let’s all try to be committed to this exercise. So far I am excited about the commitment, the enthusiasm and zeal of the people.” The Minister stated.

According to him, the seedling he planted last year is growing well while revealing that he will plant at least three seedlings in this year’s exercise.

Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV and his sub chiefs also planted some seedlings at the forecourt of the palace to open the exercise in the Upper West Region.
