Dr Seidu Jasaw tackles furniture deficit in Wa East Constituency

The Member of Parliament for Wa East Constituency, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw has embarked on an agenda to help address the furniture deficit across basic schools in the district.

Basic Schools in the Wa East district has been grappling with inadequate furniture and the situation has worsened in recent times.

According to the MP, reducing the bottlenecks in education is his priority as part of measures to complement the efforts of other stakeholders to deliver quality education in the district.

The MP described the project as necessary while revealing that the huge furniture gap in the district came to his notice when he assumed office as the MP for the area.

The Wa East District was reported to have a furniture deficit of 7,690 and the MP’s initiative will help mitigate the situation.

The furniture project from the former UDS lecturer will make available 500 dual desk to schools across the district thereby providing comfort to over 1000 pupils in the area.

Dr Jasaw who was accompanied by the Wa East District Director, Madam Ayisha Jingsung and some Constituency Executives from opposition NDC distributed 160 dual desk to the first batch of schools.

The team visited Loggu, Jeyiri, Bulenga, Manwe and Gudaayiri Junior High Schools on Wednesday, 19 January, 2022 to donate their quota to them.

Addressing pupils and parents in the schools, Dr Jasaw underscored the need to urgently address the deficiencies in the educational sector.

He called for all hands on deck to provide enabling environment for pupils to strive in the classroom and beyond.

The lawmaker donated mathematical sets and conducted mock exams for last year BECE candidates as part of promoting quality and equitable education in the district.

He has also embarked on the rehabilitation of classroom blocks in Takalamuni and Jeyiri primary schools that were affected by rainstorm.

He urged the school authorities and parents to exercise good maintenance culture so as to prolong the usage of the furniture.

Parents who made time for the donation thanked Dr Jasaw for taking steps to address the challenges affecting the schools insisting that the gesture by the MP is unprecedented.

They pledged to assist the school to use the furniture for the intended purpose while advising the pupils to handle them with care.

“This furniture will be very helpful to us. Three pupils use to share one chair and it wasn’t the best. Ideally, two pupils should share one desk for conducive learning. Other challenges that face the school include lack of teachers quarters and water.” Seidu Baba, the head teacher of Jeyiri JHS revealed.

The head teacher for Bulenga JHS ‘A’ stated “We are grateful with the gesture from our MP. We have a huge furniture gap in the school and we are asking for more. We promise to put the furniture to good use.”

“We thank our MP for donating the furniture to us. Our juniors in form one are faced with the problem of furniture. Most of the furniture are destroyed and the few that are left are not strong enough. We are very happy that they will no more sit on the floor as it will prevent the situation of pupils fighting over chairs and tables.” Yausani Emilia, a student of Jeyiri added.

Another student said “Pupils use to sit on the floor to learn which affected attendance. But with the provision of this furniture, the pupils will be motivated to be punctual to school.”

Health Sector

Dr Jasaw donated a wheel chair and a bed to Loggu Health Center to enhance health care delivery in the area.

Receiving the items on behalf of the facility, Ezekiel Nagben who is the In-Charge thanked the MP for coming to their aid as it will improve the activities of the facility.

Ezekiel Nagben explained some challenges affecting the facility ranging from lack of laboratory, inadequate wards and lack of motorbike to serve the seven CHPS compounds under the Loggu Health Center.

In his response, Dr Jasaw indicated his commitment to attend to the needs of the facility. He said he is in touch with the Wa East Health directorate and other stakeholders to adequately attend to the health needs of the people.
