NHIA TO SCRAP WAITING PERIOD FOR THE AGED

Beginning July 2022, Senior Citizens who are 70 years and above, will be able to instantly access healthcare using their NHIS cards after registration or renewal.
Prior to this, persons aged 70 and above had to serve a one-month waiting period after registering unto the Scheme for the first time or renewing after 3 months of expired membership as per the procedure.

This was disclosed by the CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye when he led a delegation from the head office to pay a courtesy call on the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Nana Amoatia Ofori Panin II, at his Kyebi Palace in the Eastern region.

The visit to the overlord of the Akyem Abuakwa State was to pay homage to the chief, seek counsel and blessings as he steps into his new role.

The Okyenhene after welcoming the delegation expressed his gratitude to the team for the visit and advised management to put in extra effort to ensure the sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He also praised the new CEO for his selfless leadership, commitment to public service, and drive to always impact the lives of Ghanaians positively whenever he is called upon to serve. He offered him prayers and emphasized that the Authority was blessed to have him as the leader.

He used the opportunity to advise the CEO’s deputies to support their boss to succeed. The Okyenhene ended up cautioning all public office holders to serve with humility and honesty and be accessible to those who put them in power.

The NHIA team is on a three-day working visit in the region to drum home the vision of the new Chief and rally staff and stakeholders along as the Scheme counts down to its 20th anniversary.
