Upper West: Sungbo Women Empowerment Organization (SWEO) Empowers Women’s Group With Over 1000 Acres

An Upper West Region based Women’s Empowerment Organization has empowered hundreds of women in the region with over 1000 acres of arable land for farming.

The Women’s specialist group, upon the request of the women’s group provided inputs, farm land and other supporting items for agricultural activities.

Women groups based in Wa East , Wa West , Nadowli Kaleo and Wa Municipal benefited from the life changing project.

Dubbed as block farming, a total of 1000 acres of farm land has been ploughed and partitioned into manageable farm sizes based on the strength of the farmer.

The farmer is provided with seeds on top of the ploughed land and only asked to manage the farm with insecticides and other inputs provided as well.

In addition to the block farming , Sungbo Women Empowerment Organization (SWEO) also supported individual farmers in other districts with tractor service and other inputs for the current farming season.

The fast emerging group, which started with about 16 membership currently has over 1000 women, 2 Shea butter processing centers with mechanized boreholes.

The platform currently has a total of 150 acres of Soya beans spread across the region.

Their inaugural mini best farmer award saw the best farmer handed a tricycle.

Chief Executive Officer for SWEO, Portia Gban, remained hopeful of expanding their catchment area and assisting more women in the coming years.

Their Shea butter processing plant has already taken many women off the unemployment rope into fully blown independent Women.
