Wa West DCE worried over indiscriminate bush burning

Madam Vida Diorotey, the District Chief Executive for Wa West District in the Upper West Region, has raised alarm over the rising number of bushfires in the area.

She urged the public to put an end to the practice, claiming it was detrimental to agricultural advancements.

She was addressing the 38th Farmers’ Day Celebration at Wechiau Bao, a predominantly farming community in the Wa West District on Friday, 2nd December, 2022.

This year’s farmer’s day was celebrated on the Theme : “Accelerating Agricultural Development Through Value Addition”.

The DCE claimed that due to climate change, the world is currently experiencing unpredictable weather, which disrupts rainfall patterns and increases food output losses.

She continued by pointing out that bush burning and similar activities had an impact on the climate in general and advised farmers to consult with agricultural authorities about adopting climate change-resistant farming techniques.

She mentioned that, a lot of interventions were implemented under the leadership of Nana Akuffo Addo to improve the agric sector of which Wa West District is not left out.

She congratulated all farmers for their labor and contributions to the country’s advancement and urged the award recipients to keep working harder.

Despite having arable land and other natural resources, Mr. Cephar Dabuo, the district director of food and agriculture, was disappointed by the figures showing that the district is the poorest in the Upper West Region.

He exhorted the populace to take advantage of the chances presented by the agricultural value chain to change the narrative.

He called on the district assembly and other benevolent organizations to roll out more interventions to increase agricultural activities for businesses and also a better market for farmers.

A few farmers received awards and certificates to commemorate the occasion. Mr. Jacob Kulo Foung, 65, of BaKpaateng was named the district’s best farmer overall, and Mr. Kobere Sabung, of Charele, was named the first runner-up.

A widow from Wechiau Bao named Madam Sambo Dorwonpo also won the award for the best female farmer in the area.
