MP Raises Concerns Over Destruction of Lands Despite Reforestation Efforts

The Member of Parliament for Wa Central Constituency, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has expressed his concerns about the challenges faced by the country regarding the destruction of lands despite government efforts to repair them through tree planting initiatives.

He highlighted the significant amount of money being invested in reforestation, while simultaneous destruction is taking place.

Dr. Pelpuo drew attention to the recent arrest of the former chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, Professor Frimpong Boateng, who shed light on the destruction of forests and the involvement of influential individuals who should be advocating for the government’s interests.

The MP emphasized that there is a disconcerting disparity between the destruction of natural resources and the financial resources being allocated for their restoration.

He called for the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to not only focus on tree planting but also prioritize the protection of lands.

Dr. Pelpuo also raised questions about the commitment of the President to fighting illegal mining and the destruction of lands and rivers.

He pointed out that despite the declaration of certain areas, such as rivers and forest reserves, as red zones, several licenses have been issued since then, raising doubts about the effectiveness of the government’s efforts.

The MP urged the President to reconsider the allocation of resources towards tree planting if the government is not fully committed to addressing the underlying issues of environmental destruction.

The concerns raised by Dr. Rashid Pelpuo highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to environmental protection.

While reforestation efforts are important, they must be accompanied by robust measures to prevent further destruction of lands and natural resources.

It remains to be seen how the government will address these concerns and ensure the sustainable preservation of Ghana’s valuable ecosystems.
