Financial Constraints Affecting Weaving Graduates- Director of Nubuke Center

The Director of Nubuke Center for Clay and Textiles Odile Tevie, has lamented how majority of apprentices in weaving fail in their quest to setting up their own weaving centers due to financial constraints.

The Director revealed this during the 2024 Woori Festival in Loho a community in the Nadowli -Kaleo district of the Upper West region, at the premises of Nubuke Center for Clay and Textiles.

According to Odile Tevie, “out of every three (3) weaving apprentices two are unable to succeed in business “.

She further noted that the Nubuke Center for Clay and Textiles seeks to use culture as a catalyst in propelling economic development.

Odile Tevie further maintained that one of the major causes of the inability of weavers to succeed in business is the lack of startup capital. She buttressed it with recent research which suggests that women are unable to raise the necessary capital to assist them in running their businesses.

She further stated that, Nubuke Foundation has collaborated with the WA School for the Deaf and Methodist School for the Blind which has attracted enormous attention from various partners across the globe.

The director further noted that due to the many constraints confronting the activities of the foundation, their are open to partnerships to assist enhance their work.

Meanwhile, the administrator of the Nubuke Foundation Asumedu Kwame Ebenezer who highlighted on the theme for the annual Woori Festival ‘ weaving a sustainable future for the next generation ‘. He said weaving encompasses both cultural and economic benefits and ought to be sustained for future generations.

The Woori Festival is celebrated by Nubuke Foundation annually and this year’s event marks the fourth (4th) since its inception.

The festival has received people from all walks of life including traditional rulers, political leaders and many others.
