BECE Candidate Gives Birth During Examination

In a shocking and unexpected turn of events, a Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate gave birth to a baby in the middle of her second paper at the Asenua Presbyterian JHS exams centre in the Ashanti Region. The student, who was sitting for the ICT examination, went into labor during the writing of the second paper for the day.

According to eyewitness Osomafo Kwasi Adjei, a policewoman escorting the candidate to the washroom noticed the student’s distress and immediately drew the attention of the authorities. The authorities quickly responded and helped take the student to an office at the centre, where she delivered the baby with the assistance of some elderly women from the community.

After the safe delivery, the candidate and her baby were taken to a private health facility for medical attention. Joy News investigations revealed that the student had been out of school for weeks prior to the examination. However, the headteacher of the teenager’s school had managed to convince her to sit for the examination.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by some students, particularly young mothers or expectant mothers, in pursuing their education. It also showcases the importance of support and understanding from school authorities and the community.

The Ghana Education Service and other stakeholders may need to consider providing additional support systems for students facing similar challenges to ensure they can complete their education without undue stress or obstacles. For now, the focus will be on the health and well-being of the young mother and her newborn.
