Nandom Municipal Assembly approves by-laws to address open defecation

One of the youngest Municipalities in the Upper West Region, Nandom Municipal Assembly, has passed strict by-laws to combat the problem of open defecation throughout the municipality, notably in Nandom township.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Raymond Nero, revealed in an exclusive interview at Nandom that the assembly passed some bylaws to stop residents from indiscriminately defecating in the Municipality.

He said that in order to stop the problem, every household was told to establish toilet facilities within their homes at a meeting presided over by environmental authorities.

In order to serve as a deterrence to others and keep the entire Nandom Municipality clean in order to prevent any illness breakout, he continued, persons who indiscriminately defecate are prosecuted and punished harshly.

The assembly has built office buildings for the Nandom Education Directory, other Schools, and Health Facilities, as well as renovations for improved education and healthcare services in the Municipality, according to the Municipal Chief Executive.

He added that the assembly provided 200 dual school desks to the Ghana Education Service, which it will distribute to the schools in the municipality that are in need of desks.

He claimed that the assembly was able to build some boreholes across the Municipality to address the issue of water with the assistance of Nandom Member of Parliament, Hon. Ambrose Dery.
