UWR: President Commissions 6.5 MW Lawra Solar Power Plant

President Akufo Addo has commissioned the Lawra solar power plant in the Upper West Region on October 10, 2020 as part of his campaign tour.

The project is the first of its kind in the region and it is expected to serve about 50,000 households through the Northetn Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people in Lawra, the president underscored the importance of the project, saying it will help reduce the transmission losses on the National Grid and improve the reliability of the distribution system in Lawra and its environs.

According to the President, the project employed about 100 people from communities within the Lawra enclave.

Mr Kweku Andoh Awotwi, the Board Chairman of the Volta River Authority said the plant will contribute to the acceleration of the socio-economic development in the project area by ensuring the availability of stable and cost effective electricity.

The generation capacity of the solar plant according to the Energy Minister, Peter Amewu has been increased from 4MWp to 6.5MWp at no additional cost.

The Chief of Lawra, Naa Puowele Karbo IV was appreciative to the president for the solar plant and many other projects in Lawra.

On February 4, 2020, the president performed a sod cutting ceremony for the construction of solar power projects in Lawra and Kaleo. The two projects will deliver a combined power supply of about 20 Mega Watt.

The Lawra project was funded through a loan facility of 22 million Euros between the Government of Germany and Ghana. The Government of Ghana through the Volta River Authority contributed Euro8.12 million.
