Wa Municipal Assembly criticized for inadequate hygiene standards

Mrs. Takora Attawa, the assemblywoman for the Konta Electoral area in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region has accused the assembly of being responsible for the municipality’s poor sanitary conditions.

She announced this on September 10, 2022, when she organized a cleanup exercise in the electoral area to transport a pile of trash to the Konta refuse dump and also drain the community toilet.

She asserts that the assembly is in charge of regularly distributing and transporting containers to different dumping sites, but that the assembly occasionally experiences delay owing to red tape, particularly when it comes to transporting these containers after they have been filled with trash.

She said that the garbage trucks were mismanaged since they were constantly in poor condition and lacked enough fuel to convey the containers to all of the municipally mandated disposal sites.

She emphasized that the citizens’ unfavorable attitudes toward sanitation coupled with the lack of commitment by the assembly to sanitation is causing the situation in the Municipality to spiral out of control.

Some residents, she continued, dump trash around in the hopes that the government, especially Zoom lion, will come and clean up the area.

However, she expressed her dismay at the community members’ lack of participation in the cleanup effort.

She stated that in order to head off the crisis, her next step is to meet with stakeholders and members of the Unit Committee to implement the “pay as you dump policy” in the electoral area.

She then urged teamwork to address the Municipal sanitation situation, notably in the Konta electoral area.

The Honorable Assembly Member also discussed other policies and development initiatives she has been implementing notably with regard to water to enhance the quality of life in the Konta electoral area.
