St Don Bosco special school is overwhelmed by resource problems- Veronica Dong

Due to resource limitations, St. Don Bosco Special School, a basic school for students with intellectual disabilities, has been experiencing operational difficulties in Loho, in the Nadowli/Kaleo district of the Upper West.

Despite having 139 students enrolled, the school faces enormous difficulties.

In an interview with Home Radio journalist Albert Dapare, the school’s headmistress, madam Veronica Dong, acknowledged that since the institution obtained autonomy in 2017, it has been struggling due to infrastructure and human resource limitations.

She claims that from the school’s founding, it has never had any sort of transportation. Teachers pick up sick students on motorbikes and carry them to the closest medical facility for treatment because the school lacks any sort of transportation. She did, however, add that if the situation was serious, they would need to transport the patient in a local tricycle called Mahama.

Madam Veronica also mentioned that some of the students have to sleep on their beds on the floor because of the space restrictions. Since they are unable to lie on top of mattresses, she partially attributes that to their medical condition. Despite having four mothers who are supposed to look after the children, she said that only two of them could be on duty at once due to space constraints, which she claimed had an impact on the students’ level of care.

As a boarding school, there isn’t a dedicated building set aside for a kitchen. Home Radio news has confirmed that the kitchen is zinc built and that a recent downpour partially wrecked it.

Additionally, the fact that seven out of ten teachers lacked specialized training disenchanted Madam Veronica Dong. She stated that while those teachers should receive in-service training, it is not practical due to a lack of funding.

The headmistress is requesting assistance for the school from the government, NGOs, and charitable organizations.
