Circuit Supervisors are not doing their work- Regional Minister bemoans

The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih has called out School Improvement Support Officers previously known as Circuit Supervisors to improve on their work for better learning outcomes.

He made the call after presenting 632 each of laptops and modems to the Regional Education Director for onward distribution to Senior High Schools under the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP).

With all the support coming from government and other stakeholders to the education sector, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih wondered why the region is battling to improve student performance.

He encouraged the Municipal and District directors of education to reverse the falling standards of education in the region saying “the Upper West Region is renowned for always producing excellent students but of late, it is no longer the case. We need to reverse that. We have competent people.” The Minister indicated.

“Initially, we use to have vacancies across the districts but now we have the full complement of our directors of education and almost all our senior high schools have heads. So why is it that we are not producing.” He quizzed.

He urged the Regional Director of education as well as Municipal and District Directors of education to enhance monitoring and supervision for improved performance.

He blamed School Improvement Support Officers for reneging on their work while encouraging them to crack the whip on teachers who are not performing as expected

“So I am tasking the Regional Director of Education as well as the district directors. What is lacking is monitoring and supervision. We need to enhance that. I get worried when I move around town. Visit schools and you will find teachers not in class but sitting under trees. Yet we have circuit supervisors. They are not doing their work. Please the axe must fall. If a teacher/s are not performing, reprimand them. That’s why we have supervisors. But our supervisors are not doing the work.” The Minister bemoaned.

Dr Hafiz Bin Salih used the opportunity to appeal to the Regional Director of education and his Municipal and District Directors to up their game and improve upon their supervisory and monitoring roles so as to improve on the performance of students.
