With just 11 days until the New Patriotic Party (NPP) selects its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, the contest among five aspirants remains fiercely competitive. The primaries, scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, will see over 200,000 delegates vote across 277 centers nationwide.
The confirmed aspirants, following successful balloting in October 2025, appear on the ballot in this order:
1. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong – Former Assin Central MP and businessman
2. Dr. Bryan Acheampong – Abetifi MP and former Minister of Food and Agriculture
3. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer
4. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum – Bosomtwe MP and former Minister of Education
5. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong – Former NPP General Secretary and civil engineer
Recent polls paint a divided picture. Independent surveys by Sanity Africa and researcher Dr. Evans Duah project Kennedy Agyapong leading with 52-56% delegate support, citing his anti-corruption stance and grassroots appeal post the party’s 2024 defeat. However, other polls, including KAS Research, show Dr. Bawumia commanding up to 68% among core delegates, bolstered by endorsements from over 60 MPs.
Dr. Bryan Acheampong has gained traction, polling around 7-8%, while Dr. Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong trail with minimal support.
Campaign tensions have risen, with Agyapong recently accusing Bawumia of dishonesty, prompting criticism that such rhetoric risks party unity. On Thursday, January 22, all aspirants are set to sign a peace pact in Accra, witnessed by former Presidents Kufuor and Akufo-Addo, to commit to supporting the winner.
Party leaders emphasize unity as key to reclaiming power in 2028. “This primary will define our comeback,” said a senior NPP official. Delegates hold the fate of the elephant family in their hands
