The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment has inaugurated a Tripartite Planning Committee to spearhead preparations toward the organization of the 2026 National Labour Conference.

The inauguration, which took place on Tuesday, 17th March 2026 at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Accra, brought together representatives from Government, Organized Labour, and the Ghana Employers’ Association. The Committee is expected to commence work immediately to ensure the successful planning and execution of the conference scheduled for the end of April 2026.

In his remarks, the Sector Minister Dr. Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo welcomed members of the Committee and underscored the importance of collaboration among key social partners in addressing critical labour and economic issues. He noted that the formation of the Committee is in line with Section 113 (1) (c) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which mandates the National Tripartite Committee to consult with stakeholders on matters of social and economic importance.

According to the Minister, the National Labour Conference will serve as a vital platform for deepening social dialogue, fostering consensus, and strengthening industrial harmony across the country. He explained that the initiative builds on existing mechanisms of engagement and represents a fourth-tier approach to promoting inclusive dialogue among stakeholders within the labour ecosystem.

The decision to organise the conference was taken by the leadership of the National Tripartite Committee at its meeting held on 27th October 2025, as part of efforts to address emerging challenges within the world of work and enhance stability on the labour front.

The nine-member Planning Committee is chaired by Dr. George Smith-Graham, CEO of Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, with membership drawn from the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Ministry of Finance, Organised Labour, and Employers’ Association. Mr. Theodore Mawuli Amezah serves as Secretary to the Committee.

The Committee has been tasked to plan and organise the National Labour Conference by the end of April 2026, as well as undertake any additional responsibilities relevant to the successful delivery of the event. Its scope of work includes preparing a comprehensive budget, determining the venue, structure, format, and sub-themes of the conference, and identifying key dignitaries, speakers, and participants.

Proposed thematic areas for the conference include Ghana’s current economic situation, security within Ghana and the sub-region, flexible working arrangements in line with the 24-hour economy policy, sustainable remuneration for public sector workers, strengthening labour administration institutions, and ensuring the sustainability of the three-tier pension scheme.

Officially inaugurating the Committee, the Minister expressed confidence in the expertise and commitment of the members and urged them to work diligently to deliver a successful and impactful conference.

In response, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr. George Smith-Graham, expressed appreciation to the Ministry for the confidence reposed in the Committee. He assured the Minister that members would work assiduously to ensure the successful organisation of the conference, adding that the Committee is committed to delivering fruitful outcomes that will advance Ghana’s labour agenda.
