Queen of Peace Health Center Saddled with Limited Staff and Infrastructure

Queen of Peace Health Center has been faced with myriad of challenges which has affected health care delivery in Sabuli community and its environs in the Jirapa district.

The Facility which serve over 9000 people has been operating with limited space and staff, according to the head of the facility, John Bosco Dery.

John Bosco Dery, who is the Physician Assistant, Medical stated that the facility has only one ward for detention which accommodates all category of patients including women, men and children.

The nurses described the situation as professionally and culturally inappropriate.

Lack of potable water at the facility according to the nurses, hampers health care delivery because they sometimes use working hours to search for water instead of attending to patients.

A tour by Home Radio news in and around the Queen of Peace Health Center revealed the delapidated nature of the building as well as overcrowding in the out patient department.

Speaking to a psychiatric nurse, Mr. Ephraim Abokye, he emphasized the urgent need for the facility to be given a major facelift and improved staff strength.

“I was reasigned here from another facility so when I came, I realized it has been lying here for the past sixty years. Recently, we had a new physician assistant who is trying to modernize the place’. He stated.

Memuna Bayorlee, a resident of Sabuli speaks in a sour tone that “the difficulties that confronts us are overbearing. Sometimes there is overcrowding here but they may not be attended to until evening. I however, applaud our nurses for the efforts they put in to ensure that patients get treated’.

John Bosco Dery who is a Physical Assistant Medical was posted to the facility three months ago and he is working assiduously to transform the facility into the acceptable standard.

He laments that “I realized we have limited staff. One other thing confronting us is that, pregnant women who come for ANC have to be refered to the district capital, Jirapa for laboratory testing.”

The physician assistant also expressed worry over the sorry state of infrastructure at the facility while pointing out that four additional wards are under construction by the community to augment existing ones.

The Queen of Peace Health Center is a health facility located in the Sabuli community in the Jirapa municipality of the Upper West region.

It was established in 1961, sixty (60) years ago without benefiting from any form of infrastructural facelift.

The facility serves a community with a population of about 9,044 people, according to figures from the statistical service.
