Football fans in Wa expressed mixed reactions as Black Stars knocked out of World Cup

Following Ghana’s elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which is now taking place in Qatar, several football enthusiasts in the Wa Municipality have expressed conflicting emotions.

The Black Stars of Ghana were unable to advance to the tournament’s knockout stages after their 2-0 loss to Uruguay in their last group match on Friday.

Following a 3-2 victory over Korea, Ghana, who had lost its initial Group H match against Portugal, needed to avoid a loss to Uruguay on Friday in order to advance to the next round.

Despite beating Ghana on Friday, some supporters were relieved to know that Uruguay could not advance from the group.

The last time Ghana and Uruguay faced off was in the 2010 World Cup, which Uruguay won on penalties and Ghana lost, but Suarez was the villain and has since received a frosty greeting from Ghanaians.

Famously, Luis Suarez stopped an obvious goal for Ghana by using his hands on the goal line. Asamoah Gyan of Ghana missed the ensuing penalty kick.

“Suarez made us cry in 2010, so I’m happy to see him crying today,” a supporter said.

However, some supporters voiced their dissatisfaction with Ghana’s failure to advance to the knockout round even though they just needed one point to finish second in Group H.

They failed to get to the knockout stage twice before their elimination on Friday. In 2006 and 2010, the Black Stars advanced to the knockout round, but in 2014, they were unable to go past the group stage.
