People living in the Funsi enclave in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region have been urged to properly take care of their eyes to keep them safe from eye illnesses.

Dr. Zakaria Alhassan Baluri, an optometrist and coordinator for blissful sight for kids stressed the importance of people routinely visiting the eye clinic for a check-up to prevent eye diseases from developing later on.

He was speaking to the media at Funsi following a free eye screening exercise where more than 400 people had their eyes examined and received prescription medications and glasses where necessary.

Dr. Zakaria implied that the eye screening exercise was a Christmas gift for the populace due to the lack of an eye clinic in Funsi and its environs.

In addition to the absence of an eye clinic in the area, the CEO of blissful sight for kids noted that people did not have the habit of reporting their eye ailments to the clinic because they did not pose a risk to their lives.

“Because they are not bedridden, people typically don’t report their eye ailment. Even though they have a clinic, the nurse has been retired for the past year. They must travel to Issa or Wa, both of which are far from Funsi, for eye care.” Dr. Zakaria said.

He recommended people think of the eye as the most important organ because it cannot simply be replaced if it is injured.

Conjunctivitis, glaucoma, traucoma, allergy, cornia opacity, refractive errors, and others were some of the conditions recorded during the exercise.

Dodi Bachan Issah, a teacher at Funsi Senior High School who received a reading glass as a result of the activity, was grateful for the efforts put in by blissful sight for kids.

He urged other interested parties to work with blissful sight for kids to plan more outreach initiatives in the Funsi enclave so that the people might receive eye care.

A reading glass was given to Halitu Muniratu, who spoke about how her eyes continuously itch and how reading and writing were challenging for her.
