Mohammed Zakou, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been charged with communicating false news following his arrest for allegedly spreading false information about the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. Zakou was arraigned before the Achimota Circuit Court in Accra on April 12, 2025.
The accused had posted “Rest Well Her Excellency” on his Facebook wall, which authorities interpreted as a false announcement of the Vice President’s death. Zakou’s lawyer, Gary Nimako Marfo, argued that the post was intended as a goodwill gesture, wishing the Vice President a speedy recovery.
The court granted Zakou bail in the sum of GH¢ 100,000 with two sureties. As part of the bail conditions, Zakou is required to report to the investigator once every week. The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a case management conference.
The incident highlights the importance of responsible social media use and the potential consequences of spreading misinformation online. The case will continue to unfold as the court proceedings progress.
