Former President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the ‘Feed Ghana’ Program, a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector and ensuring long-term food security and economic growth. The launch took place on Saturday, April 12, in the Bono East Region, a strategic location recognized for its fertile land and high agricultural output.
The President highlighted the pressing issues facing Ghana’s agricultural sector, including a staggering food import bill of over $2 billion annually and inflation hovering around 22%. He emphasized that the main driver of this inflation is the food basket, underscoring the need for a comprehensive approach to modernize agriculture and strengthen food security.
The Feed Ghana program is designed to achieve food self-sufficiency, reduce the nation’s food import bill, boost exports, and create sustainable jobs, especially for the youth. The program will establish Farmers’ Service Centres across all districts, providing vital support such as training, technical assistance, and market information to farmers.
The choice of Bono East Region as the launch site underscores its strategic importance as a major producer of staples like yam, maize, cassava, cocoyam, rice, plantains, and beans. The region’s fertile land and high agricultural output make it an ideal location to harness the country’s vast farming potential.
The Feed Ghana program represents a significant investment in Ghana’s agricultural sector, with its success vital to achieving food security, driving economic growth, and improving the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians. By reducing the nation’s reliance on food imports and promoting local production, the program aims to boost exports, create jobs, and stimulate economic development.
