On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the Wa West Constituency Executive Committee held a press conference to express profound gratitude for an extraordinary 24% reduction in multidimensional poverty in the district. Citing data from the Ghana Statistical Service, the committee announced a historic decline from 61.9% to 24.0%, describing it as one of the most remarkable poverty-eradication turnarounds recorded in the country.
According to the executive committee, this milestone underscores the measurable effects of carefully targeted social interventions, deliberate local economic strategies, and strengthened community service delivery. They further noted that the impressive gains were driven by significant improvements in access to essential living conditions, alongside enhanced outcomes in education and healthcare.
In remarks delivered at the briefing, Mr. Mathew Vaari, the NDC Constituency Chairman, on behalf of the committee, commended the combined efforts of traditional authorities, local stakeholders, and the Member of Parliament for the area, Peter Lanchene Toobu, for advocating development policies that have lifted thousands of vulnerable residents in Wa West District. He recalled that the district was once among the poorest in Ghana, yet through the MP’s implementation of key policies and initiatives, it has emerged among the best-performing districts nationwide.
The committee also acknowledged the commendable work of District Chief Executive, Mr. Wulo Richard, as well as the dedication of religious organizations and non-governmental partners for their collaborative support toward this achievement.
Looking ahead, the committee expressed optimism that, with sustained commitment from the Member of Parliament and the District Chief Executive, the period from 2026 to 2029will usher in further reductions, building on the progress already recorded and bringing multidimensional poverty down even further to benefit more residents in Wa West.
