HEALTH MINISTER DONATES TO TAMALE TEACHING HOSPITAL, APPEALS TO DOCTORS TO CALL OFF STRIKE
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has donated 35 items, including medicines, consumables, and equipment, to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The donated items include an EEG machine, nebulizer set, fetal heart detector, ECG machine, ICU ventilator, and infant incubators.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Akandoh emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the health sector as part of its reset agenda. He acknowledged the challenging circumstances health professionals have faced in recent years and appealed for cooperation to optimize the limited resources available.
The donation comes amid an indefinite strike by the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH), which began on April 23. The doctors have demanded unqualified apologies from Minister Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini for alleged disrespect to their colleague, Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa.
Minister Akandoh has appealed to the doctors to call off their strike and engage in dialogue. “I am prepared to come around the table and discuss whatever we need to discuss,” he said, assuring the doctors that he is committed to addressing their concerns.
The strike has resulted in the suspension of emergency and outpatient services at the hospital, with only inpatient care continuing for those currently admitted. The hospital’s doctors are expected to respond to the Minister’s appeal and consider resuming normal services.
