The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a 40-foot trailer loaded with approximately five million tablets of Tapentadol (250mg). The seizure, described by authorities as one of the largest pharmaceutical drug interceptions in recent times, was made during a major anti-drug operation.
The consignment was en route to the Niger Republic when it was seized through a carefully coordinated, intelligence-led exercise. NACOC confirmed that the operation was based on actionable intelligence aimed at disrupting the cross-border trafficking of controlled substances.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the shipment and are currently in custody assisting with ongoing investigations. The Commission believes the suspects are part of a wider trafficking network involved in the illegal movement of pharmaceutical opioids across the sub-region.
Tapentadol is a powerful opioid used for pain management but remains strictly regulated due to its high potential for abuse and dependency. Health and security officials continue to express concern over the rising diversion of such prescription drugs into illicit markets.
NACOC says it is intensifying surveillance and enforcement efforts to curb the trafficking of dangerous drugs. The Commission is also collaborating with international partners to trace the origin and intended distribution channels of the seized consignment as investigations continue to dismantle the network behind the shipment.
