The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched a team from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) to investigate the death of 30-year-old nurse Richard Antwi Agyei in Yamfo, Ahafo Region. Agyei was allegedly assaulted by police officers during an arrest at an Indian hemp smoking site on April 4 and later pronounced dead at the Yamfo Health Centre.

The circumstances surrounding Agyei’s death have sparked widespread concern, prompting the police to take swift action. The PIPS team has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.

Investigation Update
The PIPS team has made significant progress in the investigation, having taken statements from key individuals, including the Yamfo Youth Association leader, station officers, eyewitnesses and the medical doctor who attended to Agyei. Suspects have also been invited to give their statements, and the team has met with the Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP James Annor.

Next Steps
A pathologist will conduct a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, with a family representative present during the procedure. Once the examination is complete, the body will be released to the family for burial. The post-mortem report will be part of the evidence collected and submitted to the Attorney General’s Office for assessment and potential charges.

The police investigation aims to establish the facts surrounding Agyei’s death and ensure that justice is served. The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining the next steps and ensuring accountability.
