The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Lawra, Madam Cecilia Soyelleh, has commended assembly members for conducting a peaceful and well-coordinated election of a new Presiding Member (PM) for the Municipality, underscoring the unity and collective resolve to advance local development.
On 7th May, 2026, the election proceeded smoothly without any incident, despite the eventual winner failing to secure the required two-thirds majority in the first round—an outcome the MCE described as a reassuring indicator of progress and maturity within the local assembly.
She encouraged members to sustain the spirit of cooperation that characterized the process, urging them to remain focused on delivering community projects and ensuring effective local governance.
Madam Soyelle further appealed to the assembly to preserve this constructive collaboration to accelerate development across the Municipality.
Madam Cecilia Soyelleh also acknowledged the efforts of the Tendambas and traditional authorities within the Lawra Traditional Council for their support in providing land for the construction of the 24-hour economic market under a government initiative.
She stated that the project has already been awarded to a contractor, with work expected to begin soon. In addition, the assembly will work in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Bede A. Ziedeng, to organize an official ground durbar for the sod-cutting ceremony.
Expressing concern over inadequate revenue mobilization in the Lawra Municipality, the MCE said that some area councils record zero or very low income, thereby reducing the assembly’s IGF.
She urged assembly members and all relevant stakeholders across the Municipality to improve supervision and strengthen revenue collection mechanisms within the various area councils.
With respect to development, Madam Cecilia Soyelleh outlined several projects financed through the Assembly’s Common Fund, noting that while some have been completed, others are still ongoing across various sectors and communities within the Municipality.
She seized the occasion to assure the chiefs and the good people of Lawra of the assembly’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and unity among assembly members and across the Municipality as a foundation for sustained development.
The newly elected Presiding Member, Hon. Justice G. Gaanu (Incumbent), also expressed deep appreciation to assembly members for voting him back as Presiding Member. He extended special gratitude to his colleague assembly member for Dazauri Electoral Area, Hon. Maadi Bayuo Clifford, for stepping aside in the spirit of consensus following the first-round failure to attain the two-thirds threshold.
